If Thomas has the Ultimate edition and a valid install key of his own
(check the bottom of the laptop) then I can help with 32 or 64 bit
versions. My understanding is that I am allowed to do that. Won't be
any good if it is a key for one of the home versions though... But
surely (I'm guessing) the laptop come with a boot disk for situations
where the start menu entry for a restore can't be used? That may be all
that is needed.

My recent experience with attempting a kubuntu install on a windows
laptop with one existing partition to be resized was the total trashing
of the windows installation - my guess was that gparted (or whatever is
was) didn't handle an NTFS partition too well. Partitioning of the disk
prior to the windows reinstall was required. Then it was straight
forward getting kubuntu and grub on.
