GPL.  It was first released under a rather interesting "non-commercial" 
license, then Carmack etc, saw the light and released it under the GPL.  It's 
one of the most commonly used games engines now. (At least by 
non-professional games developers.)

I haven't tried Quake on MS Win98 in qemu, though, and I haven't tried any of 
the Linux Quakes either.

Nor have I.  I look for the Bit Bytes discs at various shops - they're usually 
$9.95 to $49.95 or thereabouts.

But there's also freewad and sourceforge, and they're quite different.  The 
monsters are something else, althogether!
