Yes, lld would have been a good idea.
Turned out that re/installing openssl fixed the problem.
Why synaptic in MDV07 didn't work it out, I don't know.

And let me tell you, there were plenty of close traffic calls, so your
assumption was not too misplaced. If I had read to the end of all the
threads i would have realised that you had fixed it.
