I downloaded the alternate iso because I still don't have an apt proxy working.
First it had trouble including the internet "extras", so I told it to upgrade as if it didn't have an internet connection. It had a number of errors, then just stopped! I then let it continue the upgrade from the internet. It downloaded about 1Gb (luckily it was the last day of the internet month and I had plenty of Gb to spare.) That mostly worked. Just a few errors that it said weren't critical. I then ran apt-get upgrade one more time and got it finished. Now just the issues it created to deal with! 1. smbfs is uninstalled and not replaced. Easy fixed. 2. VMware Server from the feisty repos has not been upgraded. Only solution was to uninstall and install from a download from vmware. Relatively easily fixed. 3. Dual screens - not working. Hmmm. There's a gui now, so theoretically no need to start editing the xorg.conf file. No luck. Google for the answers. There are now two ways of doing this. The gui way uses xinerama. The manual way uses xrandr. Aaaaaargh! Feisty was very kind to me over this - by turning off xinerama my two screens came up as two desktops - very handy. Gusty initialises one desktop and leaves the other blank. bugger! Much more research required. And as I'm trying to work in between trying different ideas, I find that the graphics performance has slowed to a crawl. It take 20 - 30 seconds to redraw a table in a word processor. There are probably some really good bits to Gutsy - maybe I'll find them sometime! Kerry.
