I've been following some of the discussion this week about disks with interest.

I would love to hear a talk about RAID with a demonstration of how to set up a raid solution.

Questions for consideration:

Can I set up a single volume with a bunch of different sized disks?

What are the names of the tools for setting up RAID? (One of the biggest battles with setting something new up is knowing what the tools are called so you can do your research with man.)

What tools do you use to monitor the health of a disk? Disks have a thing called SMART, what is it? How do we use it?

Can you tell/show us different RAID 5 configurations?

How do you add another disk to a RAID solution without having to rebuild the whole thing from scratch?

Can you use USB devices in a RAID solution?

Consider this... I might set up a small server with a 100gb disk which has 2 usb ports on it then copy all my movies to it. Next year the price of disks comes down and I've saved some money and I've got more movies. Can I get a couple of external drives and plug them in to the USB? (So I'm up to 1.1TB)

Next I get a couple more external drives, so I unplug one of my USB drives and connect a small USB hub and plug in the 3 drives into that.

Can I keep growing my small servers disk system this way?

Cheers Don
