Just use the latest stable kernel. At the moment it's linux-2.6.22.9
the -23 series has problems with mounting files as filesystems, and
network mounts using nfs.. -24 is the latest development series and is
still at the -rc stage.

I'm very wary of applying patches willy-nilly unless I either have
problems or want the functions offered by the patch, basically because
"In Linus I trust".
