Indeed -- it was undeletable from the web interface (despite recording
success, the page still existed after deletion). Thanks for pointing
it out.

I had to dive into the database directly, and look at the 'page'
table, to identify all the rotten spam that's been added. The sequence
seems to be that they create a page named after their own IP address
-- I guess that's a nice unique thing to see if the wiki is editable
-- then they roll out a few invocations of the chosen plugin. The
pages seemed to mostly be about sites where you can buy gold for World
of Warcraft.

Anyway, directly deleting the pages from the db has done the trick of
cleaning up, they don't even appear in RecentChanges now. Rather than
switch off all the plugins, I'd rather wait to see what happens next
...
