I didn't think they were the same thing... but then there's 'Card Bus' and 'PCMCIA' so I thought I'd just check. :)

I had to laugh at the link you provided... My HP has a broadcom chip in it and that's the problem.

(Yes I know the link wasn't intentional... I just thought it was funny that we were talking about just this thing and coincidence struck!)

To make the massive assumption that HP *only* use brand X wifi cards is pretty 
silly IMO. Builders use the most cost-effective solution at the time of 
building. You may have read in my answer to CS that you even have to check the 
*revision number* on D-Link cards to see what chipset they're using.

Steve you're quite right.  I agree with what you're saying...

My view is tainted by the fact that HP pissed me off!

They do all this promotion about how they support linux and then when I purchased a product... it has problems.

It's my fault.  I didn't do enough research before I got the machine.
