Not too sure. I started writing that [ and test were just links to the same program, and then luckily checked before posting! They certainly used to be, under the commercial versions of unix that I used to use. I think it's more that you end up using a subset of the available functionality when you switch between similar operating systems - the bits that work the same on all/most of them.
