Thanks.  I found autotrace last night doing a google search.  It looks as if 
it might do the job; I've also found, reading one of the AutoCAD books in the 
library, that there are some workarounds for it in that part of the woods.

There are also Windows programs that do the job, and I might test them under 
Wine, but that's not exactly what I was looking for :(
