No, the FreeRunner is not a 3G phone and thus does not support HSDPA or
HSUPA. I understand OpenMoko have tentative plans to do a 3G version for
the one after the FreeRunner's successor.

The chip is an Atheros AR6001. Atheros chips often have very good Linux
support, and this chip was chosen because of its good-quality GPL'd
Linux drivers.

I'd expect you to just be able to iwconfig it into 'master' mode, but I
haven't tried it, so can't confirm for sure.
