Hi, yes they are, and were before invoking smbpasswd.

I was setting up a temporary share while changing the OS on the regular
server, to have available for users before turning up for the day, and
since it didn't fairly quickly work I've had to go with another
workaround. I'll have a fresh gutsy install available soon and will
nervously wait to see if I have the same problem on that.

Thanks for all the replies though. google had been telling me the same
things. All were done. Adding this to my list of unsolved mysteries...
(since I might not have time to come back to this)
