I occasionally get the error that you mention. I suspect that libdvdcss
doesn't cope well with the skitters and jitters that happen when the DVD
reader changes layers. These jitters are visible on normal set-top
players if you're looking for them - playback will freeze for a second
or two, then continue.
Layer changes normally happen between .VOB files on the disc, and these
normally line up with chapter boundaries in the film. So, the
work-around is to go to the scene-selection menu, and select the next
scene. You don't miss out on any of the film this way, it's just a nuisance.
Of course, like most DRM problems, the solution is normally to rip a
copy of your perfectly legal disc.

Anyone know why I'm getting these error messages whilst playing
DVDs? I have the package libdvdcss installed. Not sure how to fix
this. I thought it seemed to occur more when trying to play a DVD
I'd ripped to the hard drive, but happens quite frequently while
I'm playing the actual DVDs. Gets frustrating when I have to go
watch the DVD on a windows laptop.. arggh!
