About 3-4 months ago I purchased a 1 gb philips memory stick / mp3
player. Initially I was really pleased with it but then a few weeks
after purchasing it, the mp3 player froze when I tried powering it on.
No matter what I tried I couldn't get it to start. So, I took it back
and got it replaced.

Since then, there have been a few more things I've started noticing that
have been getting frustrating - its takes a hell of a long time to boot
up, there are little clickey sounds when I perform operations like
moving to the next track, when counting files it gets all muddled up,
e.g. say if there are 15 tracks and you select 'next' to move from track
15 back to track 1, then it calls it track 16, the next 17, etc.

Now, again I've got some sort of file error (somehow the file system has
ended up recursive). I was in the process of deleting some files off it,
when the delete operation froze. Now, I can't power up the mp3 player,
nor can I figure out how to delete the files that are on there.

I don't know much about software on these sorts of things, but wondering
if the problems I'm having are related to the software not struggling to
interact with Ubuntu Linux. If I reformat the memory stick I guess I'd
lose the mp3 playing software. Should I just go back and complain about
the above issues, see if I can get refunded and buy a better quality
product. Or, can I reformat and replace the firmware?

Anyone had any experience with software on these types of devices or
have suggestions on what I could do?

Cheers
Matt
