I've found a patch for vmware server for the latest kernels:

http://www.insecure.ws/warehouse/vmware-update-2.6.27-5.5.7-2.tar.gz

Just proven that it works with Ubuntu Intrepid.

(But I'm also downloading 2.0 to give it another go.)
