ok well this time, going from 2.6.24-19-generic to 2.6.24-21-generic, an uninstall and reinstall of vmware has it running again. were complaints during the install about the version of gcc not matching and that vmware might crash, however it seems fine.

no doubt the upgrade to intrepid, when it completes, is going to break it again . . .

Cheers,
Roger

Maybe that's the one i need to fix my broken vmware server 2 at home after accepting the remaining patches adept was offering. I've not had a chance to look around yet. Though that's a hardy box and from memory that's 2.6.24-something, so maybe not.

Thought that might happen - it certainly sucks that vmware breaks every time there's a new kernel version!
Yay, it's friday...

And, bizarrely, the patch isn't required with (and messes up) 1.06

I've found a patch for vmware server for the latest kernels:

http://www.insecure.ws/warehouse/vmware-update-2.6.27-5.5.7-2.tar.gz

Just proven that it works with Ubuntu Intrepid.

(But I'm also downloading 2.0 to give it another go.)
