I am no expert but are you sure you need the dot-slash?
Why not just.....

No - the filename isn't part of the data used to calculate the md5....
makes no difference to the result.
~> md5sum vmserver2.pdf ./vmserver2.pdf ~/vmserver2.pdf
b2b534d5e72b1bfbf09848978039e0a1 vmserver2.pdf
b2b534d5e72b1bfbf09848978039e0a1 ./vmserver2.pdf
