I do exactly the same thing with my mail server. Two other major advantages are that I can access email at any time via webmail or by setting up Thunderbird (or any other mail software) to access email via remote IMAP. This is immensely useful when I'm traveling - I have full email access (all past email and new email) anywhere I have my laptop or a web browser.
