Ok, call me a liar. I just figured out that it was my firewall (I'm using ferm, an iptables frontend); I had it set to only allow outgoing traffic that I explicitly allow (i.e. block by default, instead of allow by default). This policy is probably overkill for my situation, but, just for future reference, what would I need to open to keep X working properly?

Thanks,
Aidan

Hello,

This problem started recently: the GNOME panel and the shutdown dialog freezes (but, oddly enough, not X) when I bring up the shutdown dialog, and press "Shutdown". If I kill X, then the system shuts down. I've tried logging out, removing GNOME's home config files and directories, and logging in again, but this doesn't solve make the problem go away. I have NO IDEA what started this.
