I just thought all that was down to the NZ 'It'll be right" and the "I'm to hard to need worry about massive geological disasters" attitude. The sense of impending destruction just adds an exciting challenge to each day.

Christchurch's skyline may be dominated by an even larger volcano... but it has have been soothingly contoured by glaciers, removing the sense of edginess about it.
