As of late I've been playing with sensors and control here. I've been using Arduino boards for input/output and Zigbee wireless or ethernet as communication back to a Linux server for smarts. Using various devices such as PIR/temperature/current/switches as sensors and this morning I've received some solid state relays to do some switching of mains devices. Still very much in the tinkering phase. I also looked at CBUS, KNX and the ELK M1 briefly but like you wanted something more open and also like to do things myself. hads -- http://nicegear.co.nz New Zealands Open Source Hardware Supplier
