Nothing surprising from 'dpkg -l', and mucking with grub or the startup scripts
hasn't helped. The same kernel works when run from the live CD (though of
course the init scripts come from the CD as well). I installed the 386 kernel
(2.6.28-6-386), and that boots just fine, so I'll stick with that for now. Just
for kicks, I removed the 2.6.28-11-generic kernel, then reinstalled it, but
that didn't change anything. Perhaps when a new 'generic' kernel come out it
will magically start working. In the meantime, it's a good excuse to build my
own kernel...

Boot using the old kernel.

Compare the output from these 2 commands.

dpkg -l | fgrep 2.6.28
dpkg -l | fgrep 2.6.27

Still no joy?

what is the output of update-grub?

STILL no joy?

look in /etc/rc2.d for the script that runs *after* wicd (they are run
in ascii string order), chuck an "exit 0" at the top of it.

OK, that's enuf for now.

Cheers, Rex
