Or take the easy (mepis) way. Or go to ubuntu and suck up gnome. Its really not as bad as many kde users think - and this from an ex kde user. I think Andrew is right about kubuntu being the bastard sibling. The main effort goes into ubuntu, stuff just seems to get missed in kubuntu, plus theres the hassle of kde's 4 branch still seeming to be unfinished.
