What happens if you exit xSane, then execute the following command:

  sudo modprobe -r ehci_hcd

and try xSane again?

I know that, logically, this shouldn't be the solution, if xSane's been
working perfectly for you up to now.  It's the only way, though, I've
been able to get my Epson Perfection 2450 Photo scanner to work reliably
(for the last couple of years, to work at all) with xSane or any other
scanning front end.
