Following up again - the broadband connection only lasted 20-30 minutes and has since been offline again.
I've called several time and Telecom keep stating that there is a known broadband issue in this area with no ETA for fixing. Arrrrgh. The ADSL connection is active (it did go down for about an hour this afternoon) - it's just the PPP authentication that keeps trying over and over without success.
