What a complete bummer etc etc etc . Kopete 0.70.4 has a bug which
crashes it when trying to add a contact. Plenty on google but no cure
Is pidgin a viable alternative? I use gnome, so can't actually answer
that one...

pidgin will do the job nicely thanks. I found it a lot easier to set up
as user than kopete
