I've nearly run out of disk space on the root partition of my Kubuntu 9.04 machine. I have around 10G of unallocated space at the end of my drive and I am wondering how I can safely allocate some of this space to root?

I've taken a screenshot of the partition on gparted and you can check that our here: http://manukadesign.co.nz/assets/Images/screen_shot_gparted.png

Were I confronted with that, I would...
1) Extend sda3 to fill the free space at the end of the disk.
2) Move sda8, sda7, and sda6 to the end of the disk.
3) Extend sda5 to fill the free space.

When I say move, I mean move. The version of GParted on Puppy Linux <http://www.puppylinux.org/> can perform almost all operations with most filesystems (on partitions, of course), if I remember correctly, so you might try that. (Don't forget to backup the partitons, though!)

You may want to consider using LVM (not for all partitions: exclude boot partitions), if Windows plays nicely with it.

Good Luck,
Aidan
