Me too, one which mirrors a production server. Although I run KVM rather than 
VMWare because it's fee and in the standard kernel.

No matter what visualisation solution you use, the naming side of things you 
referred to in the OP would be handled by DNS, usually residing on your 
router. This is what allows you to `ssh myvirthost1` etc.
