Ubuntu these days has a hosts file like so;

127.0.0.1       localhost
127.0.1.1       sodium.nice.net.nz sodium

OP: Yes a lot of mail servers will reject mail with a non-FQDN HELO or
even a domain that doesn't exist. It's a spam reducing technique.
