You hit the nail here. Lack of list leadership in knocking the trolls
off the list and telling the rest to shut up instead of replying, caused
a drain of qualified list members, not helped by a lack of new ones
replacing the ones who moved away because they eg finished uni. Both
those have killed many lists.

A list is also a dynamic community which regulates itself by a number of
factors, and it comes and goes. Number of posts has only a weak link
with quality of content. Fewer posts have nothing to do with "Linux
growing up" or some such thing. The numbersd may be interesting and/or
amusing, but don't really say much about the quality of activity.
