I actually have an old APC rackmount UPS, which is on it's 3rd set of ( easy to get on Trademe ) batteries now. The downside with these is that you need special, non-standard 'serial' cables to monitor them... it's not just non-standard USB.
Nut *just works* to some level, and is pretty good at determining what it can and can;t do with your UPS. It's a good idea to work through all the available tests, just to give you a better sense of wellbeing. Especially if it's an old machine, which it probably is if it's serial.
