I'm a vim man, so can't offer any emacs-specific help, but I suggest
removing (or moving aside if you'd prefer) any .emacs things in your
home directory.

$ rm -rf ~/.emacs*
(or if you want to keep them...)
$ for thing in ~/.emacs*; do mv -i $thing{,.save}; done


Hope that helps. I'm sure some emacs people will suggest things to try too.
