Another thing to consider if you haven't already done so - disable the
Nepomuk Semantic Desktop search in KDE (Settings -> Advanced -> Desktop
Search -> uncheck Enable). I'm assuming Ubuntu has something similar
(beagled?)
While these systems for indexing everything in the known universe so you
can find something extremely quickly once a month seem like a great idea
in principle, the reality seems to be horrible cpu and disk io problems
in my experience.
It would be fine if there was a good way to tell these services only to
do a full index at 3am but it seems to be that keeping the index
constantly up to date seems to be more important than having a usable
machine. Sheesh.
