Definately not my intention.
Mike incorporated linux.nf as a legal entitiy on Norfolk. This still remains.
There are many benefits to this that can be discussed off-list. All the
editors are a prt of this legal entity.

However, the SxS has become a rather large "force" in the community lately.
As such, it needs to be up and available and it needs to continue to expand.
We all agree on this. For several months Mike has not had direct interaction
with the admins for the .nf domain. This made it very difficult to find out
what was going on when DNS crashed, or when norfolk itself became
unrouteable. It also made it a slow and painful process to get anything new
implemented. Basically, we would discuss an idea, I'd pass to mike, he'd pass
to the .nf admins, they'd get to it whenever... this is simply unnacceptable.

The most recent DNS outage (still ongoing AFAIK) was simply the last straw.
Our apparent failure to keep our site running was beginning to reflect
negatively on the site and its community. As such, I took the initiative and
registered linux-sxs.org

This domain is something that I have direct web-access to for its
administration. DNS is being handled by Bill Campbell (who's on this list and
doing a DAMN FINE job of it). Take a bow Bill. The current situation is
*much* better than the old. A new idea gets kicked around by the editors, I
make the necessary changes on the server, email Bill, and viola. 24 hours
later it's good to go.

linux.nf is NOT going away. It will simply become a pointer to linux-sxs.org.
As Mike stated on this list earlier, this is a Good Thing for future growth.

the Norfolk mystique is very much a part of this community and will be
preserved as much as possible. Our esteemed Dr Tux will be back soon
(workloads permiting) and things will settle down from here on out.

there is no cause for concern, no need for conspiracy theories. Mike and the
other editors are cool with all this. granted, it happened rather quickly,
but I didn't feel like waiting over a week for the prior DNS issue to resolve
itself so could discuss things in a committe. I did what I delt was best for
the long-term growth and survival of the community.

I can tell you already that our exposure on the net has been positively
influenced by the new .org domain. As well, our new jobs site has caused
quite a splash in several unusual places (the CLUE list comes to mind
immediately, as does a job list on yahoo groups).

All is well. Nobody is taking over anything. We're just finally getting our
assets under *our* control. This in turn is letting us move ahead with things
that have been a long time waiting...
