I use gcombust as well and have had nothing but good performance from it. Its true that sometimes when burning CD's the system slows down for a brief period or so, but nothing that is continuous or a problem. I looked at the eroaster project (ttp://eclipt.uni-klu.ac.at/eroaster.php) and while it looks promising, it doesn't appear to offer any more functionality than gcombust. Probably just a slightly easier look 'n feel (auto-connversion of mp3 to wav for example), but that's about it.
I've tried xcdroast, and kconcd with no luck. kconcd just didn't work and xcdroast has a d*mn difficult UI (I just plain couldn't get it to work for everything - only some things). gcombust works, and is relatively easy to use, and and that is what counts, IMHO BTW the version I am running on stock SuSE 7.3 is 0.1.47, built from source.
