to elaborate...
mimedefang is a milter that intercepts mail in both the inbounc and outbound 
processing of sendmail. it will open all mime parts of a mail, run them 
against a stringent set of tests, and then if it finds anything nasty, will 
remove the offending mime part and alter the message to let the recipient 
know the email was messed with. it checks for .bat, and .vbs and all those 
other nasty email worms/trojans/things

that's a rather 10,000 foot view of it. the site has more details.
