Keith,

I have an all packages 3.1.1 here and have both
gcc and tar. Could it be:

1) They have not been installed yet?

2) Check for

/bin/tar
/usr/bin/gcc

For the parallel port issue, is the parport kernel module
loaded? (lsmod | grep parport)

Is there IO ports allocated for parport (cat /proc/ioports | grep parport)?
