Well, the thing is, while Macs can do SAMBA, they'll natively do AppleTalk. Linux will do both, although SMB support is far more mature. Have you considered perhaps installing something like Yellow Dog Linux on the Mac, and then running MOL (Mac on Linux), which is basically Win4Lin for Macs, except its open source?
