Actually, it says on the website that binary packages don't work well. Apparently there's a lot of optimizations that have to be made when it's compiled. that's probly why most vendors don't include it.
On another note, you need to run ./configure with --disable-gcc-checking as an option if you're using gcc2.96. I got a rather strong message regarding gcc2.96 until I did that.
