I can't address this directly with sendmail since I've been avoiding using sendmail since we got on the Internet 11 years ago. We've been using smail-3.2 with the whosond patches (available from sourceforge). This requires a minor patch to your POP/IMAP servers which update the WHOSON server when successful connections are made. This allows the MTA to query that server to see if an IP address has accessed POP/IMAP recently.
