I've been using an Axis 2100  web cam for the past two years and it works 
well.   And.......   it internally runs.........   LINUX!

Has many options as to how to transfer pictures to your machine but I use FTP 
which is easily set up.  There are modem options and probably some others.

Quality is pretty good and I would compare it against the Philips.
