I know I'm not Collins, but I am a Gentoo user.  Your first downloads 
should really present no problems if you follow the docs present (Gentoo 
has really wonderful documentation), but I hope you're not on dialup, as 
I must have spent several hours getting the thing connect, running back 
and forth between rooms, looking up stuff and trying it.  Then I get to 
wait hours upon hours every time I want to download something, so 
compile times always take much less time than the download, so it's 
really too bad that they're more fun to watch.  I still haven't been 
able to abandon XP, but once I get better sound card support and the 
people who write my composing app to port it to Linux ...

Oh, about XP being open to msn.com- did you by chance have any of that 
msmgs.exe (Windows Messenger, .NET, etc.) crap running?  That just may 
have something to do with it.
