I'm sure you'll hear about all kinds of mailers. But I've been using
sendmail for (seems like) forever. It just works. As with any other
software, keep an eye on SecurityFocus for any possible security problems.
But is you're going to get serious (or even think you might), this is
good. I highly suggest using Milter, and if you need virus software for
any of your technologically challenged friends, RAVantivirus works through
milter and works well, or you can hook in open source filters. Not to
mention, when they get their own domains and want to go that way, it's
simple to do incoming and outgoing address rewriting (I have about 30
domains coming in to one box, no sweat).
