An access point is like a hub/switch.. it does have embedded items in it that are either configured over a serial/telnet connection or via a webbrowser.
As for the wireless pcmcia and pci, I have yet to sit down and emss with them yet... trying to take over the wifes laptop so I can slap linux on it and play with the wireless stuff on it..
