Blast it all... According to http://www.xfce.org/download.html, XFCE should run with GTK+-1.2.8, "Important: XFce requires the latest GTK+ 1.2 version (at least GTK+ 1.2.6, rpm being built against GTK+ 1.2.10) to run. GTK+ is available from "GTK ftp site"." So, is the freaking gtk-xfce engine needed? Hmmm, seems I can configure xfce-3.8.16 without it...
