It is possible to load lprng instead of cups (I did it) but then you'll find that LPRng is borken too. Wouldn't not print for me. I finally pulled down the same 3.8.12 version from astart.com (not the rpm) and installed it. Works just fine. I'm seeing intermittent 'hangs' on 8.1 such as in typing this note where I will not see my typing for about 7 seconds and then it shows up.
