You've somehow managed to pick the wrong keyboard map, such as one
that has dead keys enabled, or that thinks you have more or different
keys than you actually do. I had this problem some time back with
RH 7.something, and it went away after I picked the proper keyboard.
Damned aggravating at the time, though.
