Drop the ethernet interface, change the setting, raise it, then restart the dhcp client. as root; ]# ifconfig hw ether XX:XX:XX:XX:XX:XX eth(number) Then bring up the interface, and restart the client. It may start. If this does work for you, then your friend requires to register the MAC address of the box your working with, with the ISP, or perform the above operation to go on broadband. No problem with the Linux box at all.
