Yes, but simply changing the extension breaks the URL on the "New" page.

apache is telling the browser that it's text. It determines this be extension.
I used to have it configured to use 'magic numbers' (think of the 'file'
command), but with all the traffic, is was becoming too much. simply changing
the extension should fix it, IIRC
