In my experience, the NIC that is closer to the keyboard connector is eth0. I don't know if that's a standard or just plain luck :) Hardware 3com NICs (3c90x) and various motherboards (Soyo, PC Chips, and no-brand-made-somewhere-in-asia). Bye!
